Harmony Gold Mining Co. said nine employees are unaccounted for and a further eight are trapped at the Doornkop mine in South Africa after a fire broke out over a mile underground.
The fire began at about 6 p.m. local time yesterday and while rescue teams have been sent underground their progress has been hampered by smoke and “a fall of ground,” the Johannesburg-based company said in a statement today. Operations at the mine have been suspended.
