The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing envelopes containing suspicious white powder mailed to several motels in New Jersey near the MetLife Stadium where the Super Bowl will be held Sunday, the agency said.
Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s office in midtown Manhattan also received a letter containing powder which the FBI said had been deemed “non-toxic.”
Hotels and motels in New Jersey including the Renaissance Meadowlands Hotel in Rutherford, where the MetLife stadium is located, and three locations in Carlstadt -- an Econo Lodge, a Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn -- received the letters, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because of the investigation.
“The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and Hazard Materials units have responded to several locations that have received a suspicious letter and substance,” FBI Special Agent Barbara Woodruff, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Newark Office, said in a statement. “There are no reported injuries at this time, and the locations are being secured. This situation is being thoroughly investigated and more information will be provided when it becomes available.”
An initial test showed that a white substance on an envelope delivered to the Renaissance hotel was cornstarch, Borough of Rutherford Police Chief John Russo said in a telephone interview.
“As for the content of the letter, I’m not going to disclose that,” Russo said. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”
The Record of New Jersey reported earlier the substances sent to the motels were cornstarch.
The mailings come two days before the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos are set to kick off the National Football League’s title game at the stadium, the first Super Bowl played in an outdoor venue in a cold-weather city. The Broncos are consensus two-point favorites over the Seahawks among Nevada sports books.
