Great-West’s U.S. Unit Finance Chief James Van Harmelen Dies

Great-West Lifeco Inc. (GWO) said the principal financial officer of its U.S. annuity business, James H. Van Harmelen, 60, has died after a lengthy illness.

Mitchell T.G. Graye, 58, Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Co.’s principal executive officer, will assume the additional responsibilities of financial officer, while Rebecca M. Southall, 53, takes on the duties of principal accounting officer, the Greenwood Village, Colorado-based unit said today in a filing.

Van Harmelen joined Great-West in 2011 as senior vice president and corporate controller and was appointed finance chief of the unit last year, said Joe Greene, a company spokesman. He was previously vice president and controller for international operations at New York-based MetLife Inc. (MET), Greene said.

Van Harmelen died Jan. 5 following a lengthy illness, Greene said. He declined to say whether the company was immediately seeking a replacement.
