McAdoo, 36, yesterday was selected as offensive coordinator of the Giants, two weeks after Kevin Gilbride retired. The Packers reached the playoffs in six of the eight years McAdoo spent with the team and won the Super Bowl after the 2010 season.
“This is the best coach for the job,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said on the team’s website. “With his experiences, I think he brings a lot to the table. Our players are going to be excited to hear what he has to say.”
New York lost its first six games before finishing this season with a 7-9 record. The team scored 294 points, the fewest under Coughlin, while quarterback Eli Manning threw a league-high and franchise-record 27 interceptions.
The Giants ranked 28th in total yards per game and 29th in rushing yards per game. Green Bay’s offense was third in the league in yards per game, seventh in rushing yards per game and tied for eighth in scoring per game.
After spending six years as tight ends coach, McAdoo was Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons. He helped guide the Packers to the National Football Conference North title this season, even after losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers for seven games and starting three other quarterbacks in his absence.
“And they still got in the playoffs,” Coughlin said. “He’s a smart, intelligent guy to work with. He works very, very hard. He’s got the dirt under his fingernails. He’s my kind of guy. He’s got the blue-collar work ethic.”
McAdoo, who was interviewed by Coughlin two days ago, will be calling plays during games for the first time.
“This is obviously a big step,” McAdoo said. “It’s also another step in the progression of a coach’s career. It’s a golden opportunity for me. It’s an opportunity I feel I’ve been groomed for.”
McAdoo coached at colleges including Michigan State and Pittsburgh before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2004, where he worked with Mike McCarthy. The next year both men joined the San Francisco 49ers and McCarthy took McAdoo to Green Bay in 2006 when he became coach of the Packers.
