Eric Schneiderman said today in a statement that his office requested that Target provide the service to ensure New York shoppers do not become victims of identity theft.
“I will continue to use every power at my disposal to determine the extent of this breach and help holiday shoppers protect themselves from the potential consequences of this incident and any in the future,” he said.
Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Target, the second-largest U.S. discount chain, said yesterday that data for about 40 million debit and credit cards may have been wrongfully accessed from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15.
A spokeswoman for Target, Molly Snyder, declined to comment on whether the company had reached the agreement with the New York attorney general. She responded to questions with a statement today by Chief Executive Officer Gregg Steinhafel.
Steinhafel said in the statement that Target will offer some customers free credit monitoring services and “will be in touch with those impacted by this issue soon on how and where to access the service.”
