Porter Airlines Inc.’s bid to more than double its flight network by flying jets from the Toronto island airport suffered a setback after the city said it needs more time to study the proposal.
The potential impacts of a proposed runway extension to accommodate the jets haven’t been fully studied, including noise exposure, growth projections and aircraft fleet, Deputy City Manager John Livey said in a report on the city’s website today.
“There is not a clear direction or plan for airport expansion, what airside and groundside infrastructure requirements are necessary, and how they will be funded,” according to the report.
Closely held Porter had asked the city to expand the runway and end a ban on jets at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on an island in Lake Ontario as part of a plan to expand beyond short-haul services.
Porter Chief Executive Officer Robert Deluce plans to add 12 Bombardier Inc. (BBD/B) CSeries jets to Porter’s turboprop fleet by 2016 to reach as far as Los Angeles and the Caribbean as it challenges the country’s two biggest carriers, Air Canada (AC/A) and WestJet Airlines Ltd. Porter’s current destinations from the island airport include Newark, New Jersey, Washington and Montreal.
