Atletico Madrid maintained its perfect start with a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo to join Barcelona at the top of Spanish soccer’s La Liga. Roma also has a 100 percent record after seven victories in Italy.
Diego Costa got both goals for Atletico yesterday in its eighth successive league win. He also had a penalty kick saved by Yoel Rodriguez before opening the scoring.
Two days ago, Cristiano Ronaldo scored in injury time to give Real Madrid a 3-2 victory at Levante. Alvaro Morata had leveled for Real in the 90th minute after Nabil El Zhar gave Levante a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute. Barcelona defeated Valladolid 4-1 to keep its perfect record with an eighth straight victory.
Barcelona and Atletico have 24 points, with Real Madrid on 19 and Villarreal on 17.
Juventus beat AC Milan 3-2 in the late game yesterday in Italy’s Serie A to keep pace with Roma, which two days ago maintained its perfect start with a 3-0 win at Inter Milan for its seventh straight win. Napoli routed Livorno 4-0 yesterday.
Roma has 21 points, two more than Juventus and Napoli, with Inter five more points behind.
Bayern Munich went to the top of Germany’s Bundesliga after a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen two days ago. Previous leader Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Oct. 5 after having defender Mats Hummels red-carded.
Bayern has 20 points, one ahead of Dortmund and Leverkusen.
In France’s Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain won 2-1 at Marseille last night to join Monaco atop the standings. Two days ago, Monaco beat Saint-Etienne 2-1, Lille defeated Ajaccio 3-0 and Nice lost 1-0 at Toulouse.
Monaco and PSG have 21 points, four more than Lille and Marseille.
In the Netherlands, FC Twente leads the standings after a 1-0 win at Cambuur on Oct. 4. Twente is level on 18 points with PSV Eindhoven, which defeated RKC Waalwijk 2-1 yesterday. Ajax is a point behind following a 3-0 home win against Utrecht yesterday.
