Red Sox Beat Rays 12-2 After Pirates Even MLB Series With Cards

Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two-run doubles as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 12-2 in the opener of their best-of-five American League division series.

Jon Lester allowed two runs on three hits in 7 2/3 innings for the host Red Sox at Fenway Park. Game 2 in the series is set for tomorrow, also in Boston.

In the National League, rookie Gerrit Cole allowed two hits in six innings while Pedro Alvarez and Starling Marte hit home runs for Pittsburgh as the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 to even their playoff series at one game apiece.

Game 3 in the Pirates-Cardinals series is set for Oct. 6 in Pittsburgh.

The other two Major League Baseball division series have games tonight. The Los Angeles Dodgers are at Atlanta, trying to take a 2-0 lead against the Braves in their NL series. In the AL, the Detroit Tigers visit the Oakland Athletics for their series opener.
