Mainz Wins, Schalke Draws as German Soccer’s Bundesliga Resumes

Mainz defeated Stuttgart and Schalke drew with Hamburg today on the first weekend of Germany’s Bundesliga season.

Mainz had a 3-2 home win, new signing Shinji Okazaki scoring against his former team. Nicolai Mueller got the other two goals.

Two days ago, European and German champion Bayern Munich had a 3-1 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in new coach Pep Guardiola’s first Bundesliga game.

Borussia Dortmund, runnerup to Bayern in both those competitions, had a 4-0 victory at Augsburg yesterday. Off-season arrival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored three times.

Among results in France this weekend, champion Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 at Montpellier, promoted Monaco won 2-0 at Bordeaux and Lyon defeated Nice 4-0.

Ajax, seeking a fourth straight Dutch league title, lost 3-2 at AZ Alkmaar today, while Feyenoord slumped 4-1 at home to FC Twente. PSV Eindhoven routed NEC Nijmegen 5-0 yesterday

The Italian and Spanish leagues have yet to resume.
