Jets Fall 26-17 to Lions in Preseason Game, Geno Smith Injured

The New York Jets lost 26-17 to the Detroit Lions as quarterback Mark Sanchez gave up a touchdown on an interception and his main competitor for the starting position, Geno Smith, was hurt.

Ezekiel Ansah returned a Sanchez interception 14 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter at Ford Field in Detroit. After a David Akers field goal put the Lions ahead 10-0, Sanchez hit Jeff Cumberland with a 26-yard pass for a score.

Sanchez left the game after completing 10 of 13 passes for 125 yards in both teams’ opening National Football League preseason game of 2013.

Smith, a rookie from West Virginia, left early in the third quarter with a right ankle injury. During his appearance, he completed six of seven passes for 47 yards.
