North Carolina (58-11) won 4-2 to oust Louisiana State (57-11) and UCLA (46-17) topped North Carolina State (50-15) 2-1 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. North Carolina will play North Carolina State in an elimination game tomorrow.
In today’s game, third-seeded Oregon State meets Indiana. The winner will advance to face Mississippi State on June 21.
North Carolina’s Brian Holberton hit his 12th home run of the season to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead in the first inning, while Trent Thornton threw a career-high 114 pitches in seven innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and striking out three.
The Bruins scored both runs in the fifth as Cody Regis reached home on Kevin Kramer’s single to center field and Brenton Allen advanced for a run on a wild pitch. Nick Vander Tuig allowed one run on four hits and struck out six in seven innings for UCLA.
The best-of-three final series begins June 24.
