Samantha Power, former Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the National Security Council, and foreign policy adviser to President Barack Obama, emerges from the West Wing of the White House in this 2010 file photo.

Samantha Power, who served as an adviser on human rights to President Barack Obama in his first term, will succeed Susan Rice as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a White House official said.
