Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard celebrates after winning the UEFA Europa League final football match against Benfica in Amsterdam on May 15, 2013.

Chelsea Football Club extended its contract with player and club top scorer Frank Lampard by one year, it said on its website.

“Frank has been an important player for Chelsea Football Club for a long time and has played a significant part in the club’s success,” the club’s Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said in a statement. The extension will keep Lampard tied to the club until 2014.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Lampard, 35, said. “Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. We’ve been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period it was always amicable.”

The London club is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Lampard joined Chelsea in 2001 from West Ham.
