Penguins Beat Islanders to Advance to Round Two of NHL Playoffs

Brooks Orpik sent a 54-foot slapshot into the net in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins eliminated the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League playoffs.

The Penguins defeated the Islanders 4-3 to win the best-of-seven series four games to two to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals where they face the Ottawa Senators.

In today’s games, the New York Rangers host the Washington Capitals who lead their series 3-2, the Boston Bruins travel to Toronto to try to eliminate the Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings visit the Anaheim Ducks for the deciding Game 7 of their series.

Orpik’s shot, assisted by Tyler Kennedy and Evgeni Malkin, came at seven minutes, 49 seconds of overtime at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

John Tavares and Colin McDonald scored for the Islanders in the first period, while Jarome Iginla added one for the Penguins.

Pascal Dupuis tied the game at 2-2 for the Penguins in the second period

New York’s Michael Grabner and Pittsburgh’s Paul Martin exchanged goals in the third period to make it 3-3 and force overtime play.
