Ajax Stock Gains After Team Secures Third Straight Title

AFC Ajax NV (AJAX), the only publicly traded soccer club in the Netherlands, rose the most in almost 6 1/2 years after winning the Dutch title for a third straight season.
Ajax won the Dutch league for a record-extending 32nd time with a 5-0 home victory yesterday over the Eredivisie’s last- place team, Willem II. Ajax stock jumped as much as 13 percent, the biggest intraday gain since November 2006, and was up 10 percent at 11:27 a.m. in Amsterdam, valuing the club at 161 million euros ($211 million). Volume was 78 percent of the three-month daily average.
Frank de Boer is the third coach to lead Amsterdam-based Ajax to three consecutive league titles, after Rinus Michels and Louis van Gaal. De Boer also won the league three times in a row as a player in the 1990s with Ajax, which automatically reaches next season’s Champions League after yesterday’s win, with Dutch team PSV Eindhoven set to go into a qualifying round.
Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Christian Eriksen put Ajax 2-0 up by halftime yesterday, and the team added goals by Viktor Fischer, Siem de Jong and Danny Hoesen after the break.
