The party’s National Working Committee named Mzwandile Masina as the convener of an interim body to run the Youth League and organize elections for new leaders, it said in an e- mailed statement today. Magasela Mzobe will be the coordinator of the 22-member body, it said.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body, on March 18 announced it removed the Youth League leaders after they showed “continued ill-disciplined behavior.” Three NEC members will work with the newly appointed National Task Team of the Youth League, the ANC said.
The Youth League failed in its bid to stop President Jacob Zuma from winning a second term as party leader in December. Zuma refused to back their drive to nationalize the mines in Africa’s biggest economy. Julius Malema, the youth wing’s former president, was expelled from the ANC in February last year for bringing the party into disrepute and seeking to divide its members.
