Atletico Madrid Misses Chance to Overtake Real With Home Draw

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to take second spot from Real Madrid in soccer’s Spanish league with a 1-1 home draw against Valencia.

Jonas opened the scoring for Valencia after five minutes at the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid last night and Falcao tied it a minute later for Atletico.

Leader Barcelona drew 2-2 at Celta Vigo two days ago as Lionel Messi scored in his 19th straight match to become the first player to score in consecutive games against every other team in the top division. Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Real Zaragoza.

Barca has 75 points from 29 games, 13 more than Real, which leads Atletico by one point. Valencia is sixth with 46 points.

In Italy’s Serie A, Juventus won 2-1 at Inter Milan to maintain a nine-point lead over Napoli, which beat Torino 5-3. AC Milan is two points further back following a 1-0 win at Chievo.

Bayern Munich moved to the brink of the title in Germany’s Bundesliga with a 9-2 rout of Hamburg two days ago. Bayern is 20 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, which beat Stuttgart 2-1.

Lyon lost 2-1 at home to Sochaux in France’s Ligue 1 last night after Marseille won 1-0 at Nice with a goal by Andre- Pierre Gignac.

Paris Saint-Germain leads with 61 points after a 1-0 win over Montpellier on March 29. Marseille is second with 54 points, one more than Lyon, which is third.

In the Dutch league, PSV lost ground on Ajax with a 2-2 draw at Roda JC. Leader Ajax beat NEC Nijmegen 4-1 and has 60 points. PSV has 57 points, level with Vitesse Arnhem which beat FC Zwolle 2-1.
