Russian Beef, Pork and Poultry Production Increased in February

Russian production of beef, pork and poultry increased in February from a year earlier, according to government figures.

Output gained almost 22 percent to 85,100 metric tons for pork and rose 5 percent to 13,200 tons for beef and meat from other cattle, the Federal State Statistics Service, known as Rosstat, said in an e-mailed statement today. Production of poultry and its byproducts climbed 3.5 percent to 279,000 tons.

Cattle and poultry production by so-called live weight, which includes skin, bones and byproducts, rose 5.2 percent to 900,000 tons, according to Rosstat.

Russia’s cattle herd fell 0.7 percent from a year earlier to 20.3 million head by the end of February and the number of cows dropped 1 percent to 8.9 million, the statement showed. Hogs gained 10 percent to 19.6 million animals and the number of sheep and goats advanced 5.5 percent to 24.2 million.
