Rain Postponses Qualifying at Formula One Australian Grand Prix

The final two qualifying sessions at Formula One’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix were postponed because of heavy rain.

Only the first session were able to be run yesterday, after a delayed start, at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. Rain and darkness then forced officials to push the final two sessions to 11 a.m. local time today, six hours before the schedule race.

Mercedes’s Nico Rosberg was fastest in the opening seession, ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean of Lotus. Defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull as seventh.

The 2010 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka was the last Formula One race with Sunday qualifying.
