Bucknell Beats Lafayette to Capture Patriot Conference Title

Bucknell University beat Lafayette College 64-56 to capture the Patriot Conference men’s college basketball championship and a place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Bucknell will be among the 68 teams that start the NCAA championship on March 19.

Mike Muscala scored 20 points and Joe Willman added 14 for the top-seeded Bison (28-5), who also beat Lafayette (19-15) two years ago to reach the NCAA tournament. Bucknell lost to Lehigh last year in the conference final.

Joey Ptasinski had 15 points for Lafayette.

In the Big East conference, Villanova defeated St. John’s 66-53, Syracuse beat Seton Hall 75-63, Cincinnati topped Providence 61-44 and Notre Dame eliminated Rutgers 69-61 to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

In the first round of the Big 12 conference tournament, Texas Tech beat West Virginia 71-69 and Texas defeated Texas Christian 70-57 to reach the quarterfinals.

Colorado defeated Oregon State 74-68, Arizona State beat Stanford 89-88 in overtime, Utah topped the University of Southern California 69-66 and Washington won 64-62 against Washington State in the first round of the Pac 12 conference tournament.
