The volume sought is the largest weekly amount since Dec. 13, when the government bought 134,157 tons, according to Toshikazu Ashida at the ministry’s grain-trade division.
The ministry controls overseas purchases and domestic sales of wheat to stabilize supply. It has bought 4.04 million tons through regular tenders this fiscal year, compared with 4.65 million tons in the year ended March 31, 2012.
