University of Illinois Gets Grainger Gift of $100 Million

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign received a $100 million pledge from the Grainger Foundation to support the school’s College of Engineering.

The gift was made in memory of William W. Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger Inc., a hardware supply distributor based in Lake Forest, Illinois, Chancellor Phyllis Wise said in a statement yesterday. Grainger graduated from the university in 1919.

Part of the gift will create an endowment for chairs and professorships at the engineering school, which has more than 10,700 enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.
