St. Petersburg-Based Carmakers' Output Rose 50% Last Year

Four St. Petersburg-based car plants produced a combined 389,300 units in 2012, 50 percent more than a year earlier, Autodealer-SPb agency reported.

About 20 percent of cars produced in Russia in 2012 were made in Russia’s second-biggest city, the agency said today.

The biggest local plant by production is Hyundai Motor Co. (005380), which made about 222,000 cars, followed by General Motors Co. (GM)’s local factory, which produced about 93,000 cars, according to the agency. Other cars were made by Nissan Motor Co. (7201) and Toyota Motor Corp. (7203)

St. Petersburg grew from 2007 to 2012 into the second- biggest carmaking region after the Samara region, where about 700,000 cars were produced last year at the OAO AvtoVAZ plant, according to Autodealer-SPb.

Car sales in Russia gained 11 percent in 2012 to 2.9 million, the Association of European Business said last week.
