Austrian Skier Marcel Hirscher Wins World Cup Slalom Event

Austria’s skier Marcel Hirscher won today’s World Cup slalom event in front of a home crowd to strengthen his lead in the overall standings.

He had a two-run time of 1 minute, 44.34 seconds at Kitzbuehel, Austria, after posting the fastest second run. Germany’s Felix Neureuther was runner-up, 0.77 second behind, with Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic a further 0.16 second adrift.

“I tried my best, but it was pretty difficult,” Hirscher told the ruling body FIS’s website after his first Kitzbuehel victory. “I knew that Felix had an awesome run and that I would need to give it my best to win.”

Hirscher leads overall with 1,035 points, while Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway has 921 and Ted Ligety of the U.S. has 736. Hirscher leads the slalom category by 134 points from Neureuther.

Kostelic had a fourth straight win in the combined event, comprising a downhill yesterday and today’s slalom. He had a total time of 3 minutes, 45.80 seconds. Alexis Pinturault and Thomas Mermillod Blondin, both from France, were 1.26 seconds and 2.56 seconds back, respectively. Kostelic and Pinturault both have 180 points, with Blondin third on 96.

Tina Maze won the World Cup women’s slalom event at Maribor in her home country of Slovenia.

Maze clocked a combined time of 1 minute, 33.68 seconds for the two runs, Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter was 0.86 second back in second and Kathrin Zettel of Austria was third, a further 0.27 second behind.

Maze has 1,654 points in the overall standings, with Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany in second on 806. Lindsey Vonn is third on 740. Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. tops the slalom event with 468 points, 13 ahead of Maze.
