Algeria’s wheat imports dropped to 6.2 million metric tons in 2012 as its local harvest of the grain increased, El Khabar newspaper reported, citing custom authorities’ statistics.

The North African country’s wheat import bill fell to $2.1 billion last year compared with $2.8 billion in 2011 for 7.4 million tons of the grain, the private Algiers-based newspaper said. Algeria harvested 4 million tons of soft and hard wheat in 2012, according to El Khabar.
