Lithuanian sugar manufacturers Nordic Sugar Kedainiai UAB and Arvi Cukrus UAB will produce the most ever this year following a strong sugar beet crop in the Baltic nation, Lietuvos Zinios reported, citing the companies.
The Kedainiai, Lithuania-based unit of Denmark’s Nordic Sugar A/S will produce more than 110,000 tons of sugar this year, at least 15 percent more than in 2012, the paper said. It has a quota to sell 64,200 tons in the European Union and will export the rest mostly to Russia, according to the newspaper.
Arvi Cukrus, in the town of Marijampole, will produce about 36,000 tons, of which 10,000 tons must be sold outside the EU, the company’s head of commerce, Rytis Morozovas, said, according to Lietuvos Zinios.
The sugar content of beets from the current crop, at 17.2 percent, is higher than usual, the paper quoted Morozovas as saying.
