California Student Wounded in Taft High School Shooting, AP Says

A student was shot today at Taft Union High School in California’s San Joaquin Valley and the suspected shooter is in custody, the Associated Press reported, citing authorities.

The student wounded in the shooting around 9 a.m. local time was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, Kern County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ray Pruitt said, according to the report. The victim’s condition wasn’t immediately available and the suspect is believed to be a student, the AP said.

Taft, about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles by road, has a population of about 18,000, according to the Taft Chamber of Commerce’s website.

Pruitt said a shotgun is believed to have been used in the attack, the AP said.
