“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” earned $37.5 million on Friday, including $13 million in midnight ticket sales, and may break the December opening weekend record set in 2007, Hollywood.com Box-Office said in an e-mailed statement.
The movie could eclipse the December opening-weekend mark set by Time Warner’s “I Am Legend,” which earned $77.2 million in December 2007, the box-office tracker said. Warner Bros. is partnered with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. on “The Hobbit.”
