Johnny Manziel, a likely candidate for the Heisman Trophy for college football’s top player, threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as ninth-ranked Texas A&M University defeated the University of Missouri 59-29.

At Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, A.J. McCarron passed for four touchdowns and Eddie Lacy ran for two scores for the Crimson Tide (11-1, 7-1 SEC). Alabama will meet Georgia in the conference title game with the winner likely to play Notre Dame in the BCS national championship game.
McCarron completed 15 of 21 passing attempts for 216 yards. Jonathan Wallace connected on five of 14 passing attempts for 71 yards and two interceptions for Auburn, which ended the season 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
After Arkansas fell to 4-8 with its loss to LSU, Athletics Director Jeff Long fired head football coach John L. Smith.
“With our 2012 football season concluded, I met earlier today with Coach John L. Smith to inform him we would be making a change in leadership within our football program,” Long said on the school’s website. “He made a difficult decision in uncertain times to return from his alma mater to guide the young men in our football program, and I will always be grateful for his efforts.”
Smith, a former Michigan State and Louisville coach, was hired away from Weber State in April to replace the fired Bobby Petrino and signed to a 10-month contract. After a new coach is hired Smith will be reassigned as a consultant through the end of his deal on Feb. 23, 2013, Long said.
