A coal mine accident in China’s southwestern province of Guizhou today left 18 people dead another five trapped underground, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident took place in the Xiangshui Mine run by Panjiang Investment Holdings Group, Xinhua said. Five people were rescued and efforts are under way to release those who remain trapped, it said.

Panjiang Investment is the largest shareholder of Shanghai- listed Guizhou Panjiang Refined Coal Co. (600395), according to company filings to the Shanghai stock exchange.
