S. Africa Fights Back to Reach 117-0 After Australia Makes 550

South Africa reached 117 without loss after fighting back to dismiss Australia for 550 on day two of their second cricket Test in Adelaide.

Touring captain Graeme Smith scored 57 not out, sharing an unbeaten opening stand with Alviro Petersen, who was on 47 at the tea interval.

Australia lost its last five wickets for 68 runs in the morning session after amassing 482-5 on day one. James Pattinson smashed 42 off 35 balls to help lift the Australians’ total after they fell to 504-9. Home captain Michael Clarke top scored with 230, adding six runs to his overnight score after yesterday becoming the first batsman in elite Tests to register four double centuries in a calendar year.

Morne Morkel finished as South Africa’s best bowler, taking 5-146 from his 30 overs, while spinner Imran Tahir went wicketless for 180 runs in 23 overs.
