U.S. Stocks Pare Losses as Financial Shares Offset Wal-Mart

U.S. stocks pared losses as an advance in financial and consumer-discretionary shares tempered earlier market declines after Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT)’s forecast missed estimates and lawmakers prepared for budget talks.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 0.1 percent to 1,354.08 at 1:37 p.m. New York time, after dropping as much as 0.6 percent.
