Spain Takes Lead Over U.S. in Davis Cup as Ferrer Beats Querrey

Fifth-ranked David Ferrer defeated Sam Querrey in the first rubber of the semi-finals of the Davis Cup to give Spain a 1-0 lead.

U.S. Open semifinalist Ferrer beat the 22nd-ranked American, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, on home soil in Gijon.

Argentina and the Czech Republic are contesting the other semifinal, which will get under way later today in Buenos Aires.

The U.S. last won the men’s team elite competition in tennis in 2007, while Spain is the defending champion.
