Rogers Communications to Buy Score Media for C$167 Million

Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI/B), Canada’s largest wireless carrier, agreed to buy Score Media Inc. (SCR) for C$167 million ($168.3 million) to expand its sports television operations.

Rogers will acquire theScore Television Network, Canada’s third-largest specialty sports channel, the Toronto-based company said today in a statement. Rogers also will get a 10 percent stake in Score’s digital-media business as part of the transaction.

Rogers owns Sportsnet, the biggest specialty sports channel behind BCE Inc. (BCE)’s TSN. Rogers will rebrand theScore under the Sportsnet name, the company said today.

“We continue to pursue opportunities to engage, expand and enhance the experience for sports fans,” Rogers Media President Keith Pelley said in the statement.

TheScore broadcasts National Basketball Association and National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball, as well as professional wrestling, mixed-martial arts, horse racing and news programs.

Rogers also owns Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays and the team’s home stadium the Rogers Centre.

The acquisition is subject to Score Media shareholder approval and court approvals, Rogers said.
