Typhoon Kai-Tak Kills Three People in Southwest China: Xinhua

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) - Three people were killed and more than 111,000 were evacuated from their homes as Typhoon Kai-Tak swept through southwest China, the Xinhua News Agency reported today, citing local civil affairs authorities.

The tropical storm, which hit China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, also destroyed more than 2,800 hectares (6,918 acres) of crops as of 4 p.m. today, the report said, citing a statement from the civil affairs department.

Direct economic losses are estimated at 1.65 billion yuan ($259.4 million), the statement said.
