China Issues Warning as Tropical Storm Nears, Xinhua Says
China issued a warning to regions along its southern coast for tropical storm Kai-tak, which authorities forecast will reach the South China Sea tonight, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
The National Committee for Disaster Reduction called on local authorities to make preparations for evacuating residents and calling ships back to port, to increase the supply of relief materials and to reinforce outdoor facilities, according to Xinhua. The southeastern province of Guangdong was forecast to see heavy rainfall from tomorrow, Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.
Kai-tak was centered on the Philippines as of 5:00 a.m. Beijing time today, the China Meteorological Administration said. The storm was forecast to strengthen as it moves northwest into the South China Sea and toward Guangdong, according to the weather agency.
