Wikileaks’ Assange to Receive Asylum in Ecuador, Guardian Says

Ecuador President Rafael Correa will grant Wikileaks’ founder Julian Assange political asylum in the South American country, the Guardian newspaper reported, citing Ecuadorean officials it didn’t identify.

Ecuador’s government “hasn’t confirmed” Assange’s asylum request, Martha Roldan, a press officer at Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry, said today in a text message response to Bloomberg questions. Correa said yesterday he planned to announce his decision this week.

Assange has been living in Ecuador’s London embassy since June 19 when he sought refuge from U.K. courts to avert extradition to Sweden, where he’s wanted for questioning over rape and sexual misconduct allegations.
