Turkey Appoints Islamic Scholar to College Board, Hurriyet Says

Turkey’s Board of Higher Education named an Islamic scholar from the Directorate of Religious Affairs to its second-highest position, according to Hurriyet newspaper.

Suleyman Necati Akcesme was named secretary-general of the board, which appoints professors and rectors and oversees universities, the Istanbul-based newspaper said.

Akcesme had previously led prayers at a mosque in Istanbul, according to Hurriyet. He graduated from Islamic schools and also served as a religious official in the Netherlands before running a foundation at the Turkish directorate that oversees mosques, it said.
