French Soldier Killed in Afghanistan, Hollande’s Office Says
A French soldier was killed today in a military operation in Afghanistan, President Francois Hollande’s office said in a statement.
Another soldier was injured during the joint operation with the Afghan army in Kapisa province in the country’s northeast. His life isn’t in danger, according to the statement.
A later statement from the Defense Ministry said the two French Alpine soldiers were hit during a firefight while accompanying an Afghan army patrol.
Today’s death brings to 88 the number of French military personnel killed in Afghanistan since their arrival in 2001, according to a count by Agence France-Presse. France is due to withdraw all its combat troops by the end of this year.
