Britain Wins Opening Match of Women’s Olympic Soccer Tournament

Britain defeated New Zealand 1-0 on a Steph Houghton free-kick to give the hosts a victory in the opening match of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament.

Houghton scored with a kick that curled into the bottom left corner in the second half of the game in Cardiff.

The London games officially open in two days, although the women’s and men’s soccer tournaments start earlier. The men’s event starts tomorrow.
