Acer Shipments Have First Gain in Two Years, Asustek Grabs Share

Acer Inc. (2353), the world’s third-largest computer maker, posted its first quarterly shipment growth in two years in a sign of a turnaround from its first annual loss last year.

Shipments for Taipei-based Acer climbed 3.6 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, the first increase since the same period in 2010 and outperforming a 0.1 percent computer industry decline, according to data researcher Gartner Inc. released yesterday. Asustek Computer Inc. (2357) reported the fastest shipment growth among the world’s five biggest computer makers.

The increase raised Acer’s market share to 11 percent, overtaking Dell Inc. (DELL)’s 10.7 percent for third spot globally and trailing Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Lenovo Group Ltd. (992) Rival researcher IDC Corp. yesterday estimated Acer’s growth for the period at 0.5 percent, maintaining its fourth position behind Dell.

Asustek, also based in Taipei, reported shipments rose 38.6 percent in the period. It has 7 percent of the market, double the 3.5 percent it controlled three years earlier, according to Gartner.
