Drogba Will Join Shanghai Shenhua For $15.2 Million, Xinmin Says

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has agreed to a 2.5-year contract worth 12 million euros ($15.2 million) a year with China’s Shanghai Shenhua soccer team, the state-run Xinmin Evening News reported today.

Drogba, who helped Chelsea win the Champions League title last month, will announce the deal tomorrow, the opening day of the China Super League’s second transfer window, the newspaper said, citing Shenhua owner Zhu Jun, chairman of Chinese online game operator and developer The9 Ltd. (NCTY)

Drogba is scheduled to arrive in Shanghai in early July and make his debut at a home match against Beijing Guoan, the newspaper said. Drogba will announce “his decision about the next step” tomorrow, team spokesman Ma Yue said in a phone interview. He declined to comment on the Xinmin report.

Chelsea announced in May that Drogba would leave at the end of June when his contract expires. Playing for Shanghai Shenhua would reunited Drogba with former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka.
