UCLA Beats Stony Brook, Arizona Wins in College World Series

The University of California, Los Angeles won its opening game at the College World Series 9-1 over Stony Brook University, while the University of Arizona defeated Florida State University 4-3 in 12 innings.

UCLA’s Jeff Gelalich had a two-run single in the first inning and Kevin Williams added a two-run double in the third yesterday for the Bruins (48-14).

Pat Cantwell hit a solo homer for the only run for Stony Brook (52-14) in the game at Omaha, Nebraska.

Arizona’s Joey Rickard scored on Johnny Field’s double for the go-ahead run in the 12th inning. Rickard hit a run-scoring single in the third inning and then scored on Robert Refsnyder’s hit for a 2-0 lead. Refsnyder drove in Field on his single in the fifth.

Florida State’s John Holland hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3 after Sherman Johnson recorded a solo home run for the Seminoles in the third.

In today’s National Collegiate Athletic Association games, it’s Arkansas against Kent State and Florida playing South Carolina.
