Swiss Stocks Advance on European Commission Bank-Aid Call

Swiss stocks advanced after the European Commission called for direct euro-area aid for troubled banks and touted common bond issuance as an antidote to the debt crisis now threatening to overwhelm Spain.

The Swiss Market Index rose 0.4 percent to 5,939.71 at 1:50 p.m. in Zurich. The broader Swiss Performance Index added 0.3 percent today.
