WFP Buys Sugar for Syria and Wheat From Glencore for North Korea

The United Nations’ World Food Programme bought $5.89 million of wheat and wheat flour in May and $1.14 million of sugar to provide aid to countries including North Korea and Syria.

The agency bought $2.12 million of wheat from Glencore Grain BV for delivery to North Korea, the Rome-based WFP wrote in notifications on its website today.

The WFP this month also purchased $955,443.60 of wheat and $351,952.64 of wheat flour from Central Pacific for delivery to Afghanistan and Tajikistan respectively. The agency bought $2.46 million of bulgur wheat from Tiryaki Agro AS for shipping to Syria.

The agency purchased $649,989 of sugar from Hottlet Sugar Trading NV for the Palestinian territories, Djibouti and Burundi and $487,025 of sugar from Limako Suiker BV for shipping to Syria.

The WFP typically reports tender results with a delay of several weeks.
