Yankees Defeat Mariners 6-2; Mets Top Marlins 9-3 in MLB Games

Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer, his first for the New York Yankees, in a 6-2 home victory over the Seattle Mariners in a Major League Baseball contest.

At Marlins Park in Miami yesterday, David Wright drove in three runs as he raised his batting average to .402, the best in the National League, and helped the New York Mets defeat the Miami Marlins 9-3.

Raul Ibanez and Russell Martin each hit run-scoring doubles while Nix added his two-run homer in the second inning as the Yankees (19-14) took a 4-0 lead at Yankee Stadium. Ibanez added a solo home run in the fourth and Derek Jeter scored on Robinson Cano’s single in the eighth inning.

Mike Carp hit a home run in the seventh inning for the Mariners (15-20), and was awarded a run-scoring double in the ninth after an initial call of a home run was overturned.

Phil Hughes (3-4) allowed one run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings, while striking out four. Boone Logan got his first save in giving up one run on two hits and striking out four in 1 1/3 innings.

Hector Noesi (2-4) surrendered five runs on six hits in seven innings for the Mariners. He struck out four.

Mets’ third baseman Wright singled home a run in the first inning, hit his fourth homer in the third, singled and scored in the sixth, and batted in a run on single in the ninth.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a run-scoring single in the fourth, Daniel Murphy scored on a bases-loaded walk and Andres Torres knocked in two runs on his single in the fifth for the Mets (19- 14).

R.A. Dickey (5-1) allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings for the win. Ricky Nolasco (4-1) gave up six runs on nine hits while striking out three in 4 2/3 innings for the Marlins (17-16).
