West Ham beat Cardiff 3-0 at home in the second leg of their Championship playoff match, putting the London team into the final to decide what promotion to English soccer’s Premier League.
West Ham won 2-0 at Cardiff and so takes the two-game competition 5-0. The Hammers will play Birmingham or Blackpool May 19 at Wembley Stadium in London. Blackpool has a 1-0 lead going into the second game at Birmingham tomorrow.
West Ham captain Kevin Nolan scored in the 15th minute, and Ricardo Vaz Te added one just before halftime. Substitute Nicky Maynard finished the scoring in the 90th minute.
Reading and Southampton have already been promoted to England’s top league. West Ham finished third in the Championship, so entered the playoffs against sixth-place Cardiff.
