The Tampa Bay Rays signed former New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui to a minor-league contract, Major League Baseball said on its Twitter feed.
Matsui, 37, played for the Oakland Athletics last season, batting .251 with 12 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He played for the Yankees for seven years, and was the most valuable player of the 2009 World Series.
For his major-league career, Matsui has batted .285 with 173 home runs and 753 runs batted in.
