Czech Republic Leads Italy in Fed Cup Semis; Russia, Serbia Tied

The Czech Republic leads Italy 2-0 after the opening day of the Fed Cup tennis semifinals, while Russia and Serbia are tied 1-1.

Lucie Safarova put the defending champion Czechs in front in Ostrava by beating Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, before Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova defeated Sara Errani 6-4, 6-3.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Anna Ivanovic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to pull Russia into the tie with Serbia in Moscow. The visitors won the first match as Jelena Jankovic defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3.

The semifinals conclude tomorrow with two reverse singles matches and a doubles match. The winners advance to final of women’s tennis’s elite team competition in November.
