Egypt Says 23 File to Run in Presidential Election, MENA Reports

Egypt’s election commission said today a total of 23 people have filed to run in the May presidential election, the country’s first since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported.

The commission said seven people filed their documents today before the deadline for nominations at 2 p.m. local time. Among those who filed on the last day were Mohamed Mursi, the head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, and Omar Suleiman, Mubarak’s former intelligence chief who served as vice president in the ousted regime’s final weeks.

The first round of the election will be held May 23 and 24, with a second round in June if needed.
